Pumpkin Sleeping in the Sun

I just thought that I would take a few minutes to introduce you to my dog Pumpkin. She is a 3 year old, 6 pound dachshund, who thinks she owns the place. She wont walk outside if its wet or dark, it takes about 1.5 seconds for her to get from anywhere in the house to the kitchen when I get the cheese out of the fridge and she has a stuffed animal kitten that she brings to the bed with her.Yea, she’s a little quirky.

Almost everyone on my side of the family owns one of these little things. So when my sister’s dog Cleo had puppies three years ago, Ryan and I knew that we wanted one. I got to see her born and she was actually the largest one in the litter at that time but the others quickly grew and she just stayed small. When we got her she looked like this. Notice how the food dish is almost as big as she is?

She likes to dig around until she finds the perfect piece of food, takes that one piece out and puts it on the floor before she eats it. And it wasn’t just food dishes that were a little on the big side, bones that any other dog would devour in 5 minutes always took Pumpkin a little longer.

She did get a little bigger in the last few years, but in our eyes she didn’t get any less cute. Even when she ransacked a project for one of my classes and decided that my yellow flower was now hers.

I chased her around the apartment for a good 20 minutes before I got my flower back; she is surprisingly quick! And likes to crawl under the dresser because she knows its hard to reach her.

When it comes to sleeping, I sometimes I think that she takes a cue from us.

Yea, she’s a little quirky, but we love her nonetheless.

Thanks for the comment Stephanie! It is hard not to love that little Pumpkin of ours even when she started this new thing where she likes to take my hair ties and run across the room with them, I just see this little brown thing run out of the corner of my eye and suddenly my hair tie is gone :)

Steven: I agree that they are the happiest breed! Dachshund’s are the breed of choice in my family, my mom has 3, sister has 2 and my dad has one too. You should see them all together! I’m glad you like the blog too! :)

Hi, found you through your comment on Pioneer Woman. Your Shrimp and Grits look wonderful along with other recipes. I am commenting here because I had a mini Daschshund for 4 years. Olive was my best bud, love of my life. Please do not let her/him jump from anywhere. I know it is hard but this does happen with their backs. I had to put Olive down after she jumped off the couch one night. It is not always an instant diagnosis so please, get steps for your bed, couch and anywhere else…..Just and FYI

Hi Jordan, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I have heard that back injuries can happen fairly easy to Dachshunds so we do prevent her from jumping as much as we can. So much so that when she wakes up in the morning she whines to get our attention and waits for us to pick her up off the bed, but like you said something as easy as jumping off the couch can actually hurt her, so that is a really great tip to get some steps. Thank you. :)
