The Northwest- How I love thee in the Autumn at Life's Ambrosia

Now many of you have probably heard about how much it rains in Seattle but please let me reiterate.

IT RAINS A LOT IN SEATTLE. Unless you live here you really have no idea, it’s not that it downpours every day but from about October to April we wake up to gray clouds and a constant mist, which can really get on a person’s nerves. But occasionally, in the Fall, we have days like today, where you wake up and the sky is blue and the sun is shinning. The color of all of the changing leaves mingles with the many evergreens and I start to realize that maybe, just maybe, all of the rain is worth it.

I was born in sunny San Diego but I have lived most of my life here in the Northwest. While I do wish it were sunnier, I have to admit I love the changing of the seasons. We sometimes get snow in the Winter, but not enough so that anyone knows how to drive in it, which means that our city can be completely paralyzed if we get 2 inches, schools shut down and people call into work. Our Spring is pretty rainy and stormy, but by May the sun starts to shine and flowers start to bloom. We have a pretty decent summer with sunshine and highs in the 70s and 80s, but let me tell you we have a beautiful Autumn and I love it. I love it because it looks like this.

Fall Leaves

I love it because I love putting on my big coat, a scarf and gloves to take long walks down tree lined streets and hearing the leaves crunch beneath my feet. I love it because as I walk I breath in the cool, crisp clean air. I love the smell of the fallen leaves and wood burning fires as the smoke escapes from the chimney of the house the fire is warming. I love seeing the leaves blow in the wind and pumpkins decorating doorsteps. But most of all I love the Northwest in the Autumn because of the way it makes me feel; the sights, the sounds, the smells, it all makes me realize why I like to call this place home.

Ask me again in March and I may say something completely different about how I feel about this place, but I will always love the Northwest in the Autumn.

i’m going through your website in its entirety for the first time, and before i knew you were from seattle i could tell that wherever you from, it’s totally different to where i’m from because of the recipes. where i am from, pepper jack cheese and pancho breadcrumbs are not popular. it doesn’t rain for so long without sun….it would probably frustrate the living daylights out of me if it did. but i’m reading your blog and i’m laughing silently to myself because, the way that you express yourself, reminds me partly of the way that i would express myself.are you a teacher or something? it looks to me that you either have to read alot or like to read alot, because of the words you use to express yourself . i admire how you put your family out there, i could never do that, i’m too private. but i guess i just want to say, i admire what you do with the site, especially how you respond to people who have problems or questions about your recipes. keep up the good work!

hey belle, thank you for your nice comments about the blog :) Where are you from? You’re so lucky that it doesn’t rain nearly as much, it does frustrate the living daylights out of me at times! I am not a teacher, but funny you should mention reading, I have loved to read since I was a little kid. In elementary school, my best friend and I would actually spend some of our recesses in the library reading. A little nerdy I know, but I love getting lost in books and getting to know the characters. I mostly read fiction books, but I also love culinary memoirs surprise surprise ;-) I share recipes because I want people to make them, so I am more than happy to answer any questions that you or anyone may have so please don’t hesitate to ask!

i’m from the caribbean! it’s a string of islands to the right of the americas….for some reason i think that you will be surprised that a caribbean girl is interested in your cooking, our way of cooking is slightly different. i love to bake so, i’m constantly looking for new recipes to try. i stumbled onto your site when i was looking for the best fudge brownie cookie recipe to try. as i told you, it was a hit! but, i’m also interested in some of your cooking recipes, some of which i’m familiar with, even though your version may be slightly different. that’s one of the things that i like about reading other people’s recipes, some people put a spin on a traditional recipe and it opens a whole new direction for that particular food. after a while you find yourself trying out and adding to their new invention.i loved reading when i was a child too, i still love to read, it’s just that i don’t have the time to do it as much as before. it’s very sunny down here, we have 2 seasons for the year,not 4… a dry season when we experience more sunny weather than rain which is the first part of the year….for about 5-6 months, then the rainy season, which is the opposite. but, hardly a week goes by when we don’t see the sun, we probably have 1 week in the year like that, if so much. i find not only some of your recipes interesting but the way you constructed the site. some other sites that i have visited have some really good recipes that i have tried out and they were hits, but i can’t ask the owner of the recipe any questions about different versions that i may want to try. some of the websites just aren’t as encouraging. so, overall, keep posting your recipes, and i guarantee you the questions will keep coming! take care:-)
