Merry Christmas!
Posted December 24, 2011
I thought that Spring would never ever get here, but it sure did feel like it was here this weekend. We had sunny skies and it was about 70 degrees which is quite a pleasant experience after a Seattle winter. I especially love this time of year because of all of the beautiful, fresh produce that starts to pop up. Right now there are plenty of bunches of asparagus around and before you know it beautiful red tomatoes and fresh spicy peppers will be popping up everywhere. I can’t wait! Every year around this time I always say, you know I should start a little garden. And every year I would put it off. Well not this year! This weekend I decided to head to my local grocery store and pick up all that I needed to start my own little garden.
I do not live in a house, nor do I have a yard at my apartment so my garden will be a little patio garden. As Ryan and I were walking around the gardening section, I was surprised to find that there were quite a few things that I could grow even though we have limited space. I got a few of my favorite herbs: oregano, basil and thyme. I also love nothing better than a perfectly ripe tomato on a summer day so I bought a tomato plant. I also picked up a packet of habanero and jalapeno seeds to try my hand at growing some peppers.
Once I got home, I sat outside enjoying the sun and planted them in a few different pots. I know that our temperatures aren’t quite where they need to be to grow these outside so I’ll be keeping them inside for the time being. Now I do not have a green thumb, so who knows how this will go. Hopefully in a few short months I’ll have some fresh herbs, tomatoes and peppers. With any luck, my peppers will look like those in the picture above that Ryan took at Pike Place Market. Imagine all of the yummy recipes I will be able to create! Since I am so new to this, does anyone have any tips for success?
On another note, after hearing all of the twitter talk, I decided to get an account of my own. I am finding actually quite addicting ;-) My twitter name is DesereeK if you’d like to follow me.
