Cranberry Apple Crumble Pie

Cranberry Apple Crumble Pie may become your new favorite Thanksgiving dessert! This simple crumble pie recipe is a favorite with everyone who tries it.

When it comes to holiday flavors apple and cranberry are right at the top of the list. This Apple Cranberry Pie combines the two in a delectable holiday dessert that is going to be a show stopper for your celebrations.

Unlike traditional apple pies that have a bottom crust and a top crust, this pie has a bottom crust and a buttery, crumble topping that is honestly my favorite part.

I mean the sliced apples and cranberries are good too but there is just something about a crumble topping.  It’s slightly crispy and loaded with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. It really takes this pie to the next level. And unlike more intricate top crusts, the crumble on the pie is super easy to make.

Which makes your holiday prep even easier. So a total win!

Let’s talk about the ingredients you need to make it happen:

Cranberry Apple Pie Ingredients:

Cranberry Apple Pie Ingredients.

There are two different aspects to this recipe: The pie filling and the crumble. To make the pie filling you’ll need:

  • CRUST: You can make your own pie crust, but in a pinch, I reach for pre-made refrigerated crusts. There is no shame in it!
  • APPLES: You’ll want to use apples that hold up for cooking. For this recipe I suggest using granny smith, honey crisp, fuji or braeburn.
  • CRANBERRIES: You can use fresh or frozen for this recipe.
  • GRANULATED SUGAR: Both apples and cranberries can be pretty tart so you’ll need the sugar to sweeten things up.
  • FLOUR: As the fruit cooks it will release juices, adding flour to the mixture helps the juice thicken as the pie cooks.
  • CINNAMON AND NUTMEG: These give you that classic apple pie flavor.

To make the crumble topping you’ll need:

  • FLOUR
  • BROWN SUGAR
  • CINNAMON
  • MELTED BUTTER:  I chose to use melted butter when I made this. The topping might seem a bit wet at first but the result was so buttery and had the perfect crisp.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:

I used to be intimidated by the thought of making pies. But once I started doing it, I realized that they are pretty easy to make. Follow along with these step by step photos and instructions to see just how easy it is.

  • STEP #1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees and place pie crust into a 9 inch deep pie plate. Flute the edges if desired.
  • STEP #2: Make the filling by combining the sliced apples, cranberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg together in a bowl. Toss to coat the apples and cranberries in the flour.
  • STEP #3: Place filling into the prepared pie crust.
  • STEP #4: Make the crumble topping by combining all of the ingredients together in a bowl. The mixture may seem a bit wet and that’s ok.
  • STEP #5: Sprinkle the the filling over the top of the crust.
  • STEP #6: Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Reduce temperature to 375 and continue cooking for 35 – 45 minutes or until the crumble is browned and the filling is thickened and bubbly.
  • STEP #7: Remove pie from oven and allow to cool completely (at least 3 hours) before slicing.

Storage and Leftovers:

Because this pie doesn’t have any egg, cream or custard, it can be kept on the counter for 2 days without refrigeration. Serve at room temperature or warm with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Cranberry Apple Pie

  • 1 pie crust
  • 5 cups thinly sliced apples peeled
  • 1 cups fresh cranberries
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Crumble Topping

  • 2/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted and cooled

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place pie crust into 9 inch deep dish pie plate. Flute edges if desired.
  • Make filling by combining apples, cranberries, sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg together in a bowl. Mix well.
  • Make the crumble topping by combining flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl. Pour butter over and mix until crumbly.
  • Carefully spoon apple cranberry filling into pie crust. Sprinkle crumble topping over the top.
  • Place pie on a rimmed baking sheet and bake on the bottom rack of preheated oven for 20 minutes. Reduce temperature to 375 and continue cooking for 35 - 40 minutes or until crumble is golden brown and filling is thickened and bubbly. If crust starts to brown too much place some aluminum foil around the edges to keep it from getting too dark.
  • Remove pie from oven, allow to cool at room temperature for at least 3 hours before slicing.
  • Serve cold or warmed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Crumble topping may seem a bit wet with making it but it will be fine after it bakes.
