O Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree

How lovely are thy branches. I think its the sweet smell of pine, the glowing lights and the beautiful decorations that make the Christmas tree one of my favorite parts of the season. For the past few years Ryan and I have made it a tradition to go and cut down our own, this year was no exception.

It is a pretty fun experience, cutting down your own Christmas tree. We like to go to a place that has a little gift shop and serves free hot chocolate, it adds to the whole spirit of the day. And when I say "we" cut down our tree I really do mean Ryan, I hold the dog and attempt to take pictures. All of that aside, I love walking through the endless lines of trees, smelling each one and waiting for the perfect one to jump out at me. For the last couple of years the perfect one has been a noble fir. These can be pretty bare trees but the trees we have picked out tend to be a bit fuller. The spacing is important though because it lets you weave in and out with your lights and decorations. And let me tell you we put a lot of lights on our tree, did you know the recommendation is 100 lights per foot? We got a 7ft tree, meaning there are 700 lights on our tree! It may make our electricity bill go sky high but its worth it to see the tree sparkle when you walk by.

As far as decorations go, we picked a red, sliver and white color scheme a few years ago, and I still love it. Its homey yet classic at the same time. We have the traditional Christmas balls and candy canes but we also have several ornaments that mean something and will be cherished for years to come. For instance, Ryan got me one on our wedding day with 3 little penguins on it, and about 5 or 6 years ago I got Ryan a turtle ornament, it may sound a little weird but it has significance to us. I am interested, what are the decorations that your tree would not be complete without?

We have a few ornaments that I enjoy pulling out of the box and hanging on the tree each year but the one that sticks out right now is an ornament that was given to me when Des was just a baby. It is a teddy bear on a rocking chair with her name inscribed below. It helps remind me how special this time of year is and how important tradition and family are.
