What says summer more than grilling with friends and drinking a cold beer? Not many things that I can think of. That is why when the nice people at Heineken asked me to pair a summer grilling recipe with their beer, I had no problems saying yes. Any excuse to have a summer BBQ!
Before I got started on my recipe development, I had to stop by my local Kroger to pick up a 12 pack of Heineken, because what is a family summer BBQ without beer to quench the thirst? I also like the fact that Heineken is a light beer. In the summer, that is just what I am looking for. Something not too heavy and something that pairs well with anything you can toss on the grill. Heineken is just that.
Once I had that, it didn’t take long to figure out what I was going to grill to pair with the light beer: Spicy Italian Sausage Dogs. Why spicy? Well because for me, nothing goes better with an ice cold beer than something spicy. Some spicy barbecue chips or baked pita chips would be fantastic with this Italian sausage recipe, too.
I also wanted to make something easy. After all, during a backyard summer BBQ with friends, you don’t want to have to spend all of your time in front of the grill right?
All you need is spicy Italian sausage links, some shredded mozzarella, marinara and some pickled hot peppers and you’re good to go.
Don’t forget the ice cold Heineken to go with these Spicy Italian Sausage Dogs though. It’s a must.
Heat grill to medium-high heat. Cook sausages until cooked through, 8 - 10 minutes.
Place hot sausages in buns and top with cheese, marinara and spicy peppers. Serve immediately.
