Meatballs are always a crowd pleaser in our house. Whether they are served as an appetizer or dinner entree, everyone always devours them. Myself included. Most meatballs are made with ground beef or pork, but in an effort to lighten things up just a little bit I use ground turkey in this recipe. And when combined with the onions, cumin and Madras curry powder also in this recipe, you might have trouble believing they are a little better for you.

Some of you may be wondering what Madras curry is. Madras curry is a spicier version of curry powder that comes from South India. It has many of the same spices as regular curry like coriander, turmeric and cumin but Madras curry also has the addition of chili peppers. While I don’t find it too spicy, you could also substitute mild curry powder in this dish and still get the wonderful curry flavor.

Des, this is the 2nd recipe I’ve made from your site (1st being the shrimp tacos) and I think this is the first time I’ve had meatballs that didn’t need sauce. I’m making the tacos and meatballs for family coming in this weekend. I have some of my own good recipes, but these…wow!! Thanks!

I use curry sometimes when I roast chicken but I never thought of putting them in turkey meatballs. I love curry. Can’t wait to try this one.
Here in NH I used to work for a middle-eastern family from India and the food was so different. Didn’t like all of it but most of it was delicious. They used yogurt in many recipes too.
    Thanks so much!

Thanks everyone! Mrs. L- I don’t make my own, although that does sound like a great idea, I picked up some at a local spice shop but I have seen the Spice Islands version at my local grocery store before. Hope this helps!

I love meatballs. Tried to make chicken katsu meatball once. Basic chicken meatball and mixed in with some homemade katsu sauce (worcheshire sauce and ketchup) and breaded with panko flakes and baked. Ate with more katsu sauce and siracha.

I like the thought of both using turkey in this and the curry. Do you make your own Madras Curry powder or do you buy a specific brand?

  18. Memoria March 4, 2010

I love your addition of curry powder. These meatballs look amazing. Great photo as usual.

I’ve never made my own meatballs before. I think that the curry powder will be out of this world when I try them.
