Beef and Broccoli is an easy, flavorful dinner that is perfect for weeknights! Made with tender beef, crisp broccoli and a savory sauce.
I love stir-fry dishes like this Beef and Broccoli. Why? Because they are packed with flavor, everyone always loves them and they come together so quickly. This means that if you’ve got a busy weeknight but want to avoid getting take out, stir-fry meals always fit the bill.
Beef and Broccoli just happens to be one of those dishes that we always order when we go out to our favorite Chinese restaurant and while that’s always good, it’s nice to be able to recreate those delectable meals at home too.
Let’s talk about what you’ll need to make it.
Beef and Broccoli Ingredients:
FLAT IRON STEAK: If I had to pick a favorite cut of steak it would be flat iron. It is so tender and has such a rich flavor and it works perfectly for this recipe. Just make sure to slice it thin.
CORNSTARCH: This is going to help give the steak a bit of a crisp exterior as well as help the sauce thicken.
SOY SAUCE: You’ll use this to marinate the steak as well as in the sauce mixture.
SHAOXING WINE: This is a Chinese cooking wine that has a slightly sweet and nutty. You’ll use it both in the steak marinade as well as the sauce. If you can’t find it you can substitute dry sherry cooking wine.
BROCCOLI: Fresh broccoli is going to give you the best results in this recipe. Cut it into bite-sized florets.
CHICKEN BROTH: I like to use low-sodium chicken broth because the soy sauce will add plenty of salt.
BROWN SUGAR: To add a touch of sweetness to the sauce.
SESAME OIL: Adds a nutty flavor. A little goes a long way and you don’t need much.
OYSTER SAUCE: Adds umami flavor and can often be found in the Asian/International aisle of your grocery store.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:
Making Beef and Broccoli is pretty easy. I do recommend using a wok or other large pan to make it in. It comes together quickly so make sure you have everything ready before you start to stir fry it all.
Mix beef, cornstarch, wine and soy sauce. Blanch broccoli. Whisk together sauce ingredients. Stir-fry beef, in batches if necessary. Add broccoli and sauce. Cook until sauce thickens.
STEP #1: Slice steak into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place in a bowl and add cornstarch, soy sauce and Shaoxing wine. Use clean hands to completely coat the meat in the cornstarch/soy sauce/wine. Set aside.
STEP #2: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add broccoli. Cook just until it turns bright green, 2 – 3 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a bowl of ice water. This will stop the cooking. Drain and pat the broccoli dry.
STEP #3: Whisk together all of the ingredients for the sauce.
STEP #4: Heat a large wok over medium-high heat. Cook the steak, in batches if necessary, until browned and cooked through.
STEP #5: Reduce heat to medium-low. If you’ve cooked the meat in batches, return all of the beef to the pan and add in broccoli and sauce. Cook several minutes until the sauce starts to thicken. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve over rice.
Storage and Leftovers:
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat and eat within a few days.
