This is a recipe that I have thought about sharing at one time or another over the years but never did. I was hesitant because most might think I’m crazy when I say: Cream cheese on a hot dog is amazing. But now that our Seahawks are in the Super Bowl, I thought it was only appropriate to celebrate Super Bowl week with the Seattle Dog.
When I first moved to Seattle about 7 years ago, I had never heard of the Seattle dog. In fact, when I first heard about it my initial reaction was: Are you serious? Cream cheese on a hot dog? It was especially popular whenever we would leave the bar. All of the street vendors would be selling them right outside the bar doors.
I figured it was only drunk people who liked them.
I mean really. Cream cheese. On a hot dog.
Then one time, before a Mariners game, I decided to try one.
I had not had one sip of alcohol. Mind you. I just wanted to give it a go.
Holy moly. They are good. It just works. Trust me. The textures work so well together. It’s seriously my favorite way to enjoy a hot dog now.
Now I say hot dog, but I actually use sausages because I do like them more than your traditional hot dog. Most street vendors around here will serve these using a traditional hot dog or a polish sausage. I chose to use bratwurst but you can use whatever type of sausage you like.
So I know it might sound crazy but give it a try, it just might surprise you. Oh yeah and…GO HAWKS!
Seattle DogPrint Recipe
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, sliced
- 4 bratwurst or other sausage
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 4 hot dog buns
Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat until butter melts. Add in sliced onion. Reduce heat to medium low. Cook, stirring occasionally until onions turn brown and caramelize, about 20 minutes.
While the onions are cooking, cook sausages according to package directions.
Once onions and sausages have cooked, spread about 1 ounce of cream cheese on each hot dog bun, top with sausage and caramelized onions. Serve immediately.
