Switch up your biscuit game with these Chive Cream Biscuits. They are flaky, oniony and will make the perfect addition to your holiday table.

When it comes to holiday tables, is it really complete without a basket full of warm biscuits? The obvious answer is no. At least around here.

There is much to love about biscuits. They are flaky, tender and, of course, a good vehicle for butter. Buttermilk Biscuits are the classic but you can really do so many different variations with them. For this version, instead of buttermilk we’re using heavy cream and also adding a punch of onion flavor and color by adding chives.

And guys, I think you’re going to love this version. Let’s talk about what you’ll need to make them:

Chive Cream Biscuits Ingredients:

  • FLOUR: No need for any fancy flour. All purpose flour works just fine.
  • FRESH CHIVES: Fresh chives are a must when making this recipe. They are going to give you the best flavor and color.
  • BAKING POWDER: To help the biscuits rise.
  • SALT
  • BLACK PEPPER: Freshly ground is best! It will give the biscuits more flavor.
  • HEAVY CREAM: Using heavy cream in these biscuits is going to give them a rich and tender biscuit.
  • MELTED BUTTER: To brush on top of the biscuits before they are cooked so that they brown.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:

Making these Chive Cream Biscuits is really easy! No need to wait for anything to rise, simply mix, roll, cut and bake. Follow along with these step by step photos and instructions to guide you every step of the way.

  • STEP #1: Stir together flour, chives, baking powder, salt and pepper. Mix just until combined.
  • STEP #2: Slowly stir in heavy cream and continue to mix until it forms into a ball.
  • STEP #3: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. About 10 turns.
  • STEP #4: Use a rolling pin to roll the dough to 1/2 inch thick. Use a round biscuit cutter to cut biscuits. Repeat rolling and cutting to make about 9 – 12 biscuits. Tip: Make sure that you simply press and lift the biscuit cutter from the dough, instead of twisting. This will help with the rise of the biscuits.
  • STEP #5: Place on a baking sheet, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with pepper. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm.

Storage and Leftovers:

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. For freshest biscuits eat within a few days.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup minced fresh chives
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper (plus more for sprinkling)
  • 1 1/3 cups heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, chives, baking powder, salt and pepper. Gradually stir in enough of the cream to form a dough that comes together into a ball.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured work surface and knead gently, adding flour as needed to prevent sticking, until smooth, about 10 turns. Roll out the dough 1/2 inch thick. Using a round biscuit cutter 2 1/2 inches in diameter cut out as many biscuits as possible. Transfer the biscuits to an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart. Gather together the scraps, roll out 1/2 inch thick and cut out as many additional biscuits as possible. Add to the baking sheet. Brush the biscuits with the melted butter and sprinkle with pepper.
  4. Bake until light brown, about 15 minutes. Remove the biscuits from the oven and serve hot or let cool an the pan on a wire rack and serve warm.

I am looking forward to the awesome combo of – stuffing, turkey and cranberry sauce – all in one bite. Though I’m going to try a bourbon cranberry compote this year to switch things up.

I usually make the same thyme and cracked black pepper biscuits for Thanksgiving, but I definitely think this will grace the table instead this year. They look awesome!

I’ve never been a big biscuit fan myself, but those look amazing.

This year, I’m looking forward to the turkey because we decided to get a local, organic turkey this year and we’re going to brine it. I’ve never done a fresh (let alone organic) turkey before, so I’m excited to see how it turns out. Also, I’ve been craving turkey for like two months.

I am definitely going to try these biscuits. Mmmm… One thing I definitely look forward to on Thanksgiving is my grandma’s pecan pie. She’s almost 95 and she still rocks it! No one has been able to duplicate it. Must be all the love she adds as an extra ingredient. :)

  22. CleverCookGirl November 9, 2010

I can’t wait until Thanksgiving to try these biscuits! One of my many favorites is sweet potato pie. I grew up eating pumpkin pie but once I had a taste of sweet potato…it became a new favorite.

  23. Cookie November 9, 2010

This holiday season I am definitely looking forward to my grandpa’s peanut butter fudge! He makes it every single year without fail, and has had so much practice, that he’s the best fudge maker I know. He also excels at peanut brittle and pecan pie, but the peanut butter fudge is what holds a special place in my heart!

  28. V November 9, 2010

I am most looking forward to Lebanese Rice Dressing! It is a MUST HAVE for me and my family at Thanksgiving. My parents are out of the state this year, and so this will be my first Thanksgiving with my own family! I’m excited to try to make all the wonderful dishes that my mother makes every year. I had been going to buy Costco rolls/biscuits, but I think these might be worth the effort.

    Thanks!!!

  33. Jennifer November 9, 2010

I’m looking forward to eating the sweet potatoes that my mom makes the most!! :)

  34. Stephanie November 9, 2010

I actually AM a biscuit girl. I eat everything white (except gravy) on my Thanksgiving plate. Turkey (white meat), biscuits, mashed potatoes (brown gravy).

Then, the dessert plate gets colorful, with everything brown. Pecan pie and apple pie. :)

  35. Neeta November 9, 2010

Wow, those biscuits look yummy! I have to try them out! For Thanksgiving, I’m looking forward to spending the afternoon with family and friends. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it is not about presents and lacks the commercialization of Christmas. It is just about getting together, giving thanks for the important things in life (health, family and loved ones) and enjoying a good meal. Best holiday of the year!

  36. Sarah November 9, 2010

For me, holiday dinners are all about eating my favorite vegetables all tarted up with butter, cream, sugar, booze, etc.! It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without turkey and stuffing, but my true loves are the green bean casserole, glazed carrots and candied sweet potatoes!

  37. karen November 9, 2010

Most looking forward to the sweet potatoes with bourbon that I only make for Thanksgiving. So they are so good!

  38. Susan K November 9, 2010

Homemade yeast rolls and pecan pie!!

  39. Christy November 9, 2010

These biscuits look amazing! I’m mostly just looking forward to seeing my family this thanksgiving, but of all the wonderful food I’m expecting, the most comforting and delicious is probably my mom’s sweet potato muggin.

  40. Q. November 9, 2010

I typically obstain from empty carbohydrates (sweets, bread, etc.) throughout the week, so I am VERY much looking forward to CARBING UP! Bring on the biscuits and pie.

  41. Shae November 9, 2010

There are any number of foods I look forward to on Thanksgiving, but the common denominator is always gravy. Potatoes with gravy. Turkey with gravy. Stuffing with gravy. God, I need a bypass just thinking about it.

  42. Angie November 8, 2010

My delicious Pumpkin Cheesecake. Got to try these little gems though.

  43. Jess Ginger November 8, 2010

I usually look forward to my roasted brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes but this year I excited about the turkey! I have always been scard of cooking meat in general. Last year I stayed in PDX to help my wife’s sick grandmother and ended up doing the entire dinner myself and it was a hit! It was just the confidence boost I needed to try harder this year. I have been researching and compiling info on how to brine and cook the perfect turkey. This year I finally got my honey to take time out (two jobs) to relax and cook with me. I’m over the moon. This turkey will be epic! *fingers crossed*

  44. Dee November 8, 2010

Stuffing is my absolute favorite Thanksgiving day food! I would love to give these biscuits a try.

  45. Alexandra November 8, 2010

Wow so many entries! This MUST be the BEST cook book ever judging by the number of people who have commented! I myself love bread products of any variety so I will definitely have to try this recipe soon! For Thanksgiving though I am most looking forward to my family’s squash caserole. I know right? It sounds odd that out of all the options available that squash caserole would be my favorite but it is. It’s basic and delicious with mashed yellow squash, plenty of butter, onion, pepper and breadcrumbs on top. Nothing beats it. Ever. Now I’m hungry. :)

  46. "Netty Crocker" November 8, 2010

I’m thankful to be going to North Carolina to have Thanksgiving with my sister this year, where she’ll have a CASE of Carolina’s BEST Sweet Potates awaiting to be twice baked and stuffed with toasted coconut marshmallows and sprinkled with a pecan praline topping. DI-VINE and a MUST-HAVE at both our Thanksgiving AND Christmas dinners year-after-year. Yum! ;)

  47. Lana November 8, 2010

I hate to say it, but I’m most looking forward to plain ol’ turkey with gravy. I know it’s completely boring, but Thanksgiving is the only time all year that I can have a substantial slice of turkey with crispy skin attached and drowned in a beautiful brown sauce and I just love it!

  48. Xochi November 8, 2010

I am waiting with baited breath for the very first opportunity to make Eggnog French Toast. I’ve made it every holiday season since you first posted it Des, in 2008. SO INCREDIBLY GOOD.

  49. Naomi November 8, 2010

  58. Michelle November 7, 2010

Oh, these look dreamy. :) I love biscuits! Your question is just too hard because I would have to choose at least 3 things to be fair to my faves – mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, and biscuits!

  59. Sara November 6, 2010

yummy, can’t wait to make these! I love stuffing and gravy – mixing different kinds of bread, rice, and spices to make a delicious, moist stuffing. Course I also love the bourbon pecan pie with whipped cream. Can you gain weight just thinking about it?

  65. Elizabeth November 6, 2010

I love your website! My friend and I get together about once a week and choose a recipe. We refer to your blog as the “food porn site”. Awesome stuff!

I am looking forward to eating pozole when I go home to LA. My family is not Mexican, but I have a few friends who invite me over since their mom’s make it around Christmas time. Yum…..hominy-pork stew eaten with lots of lemon and tostada shells. :)

  66. Susan November 6, 2010

I am looking forward to the stuffing and lots of gravy…my favorite part of a turkey dinner.

  67. Jenn's Food Journey November 6, 2010

  68. Sara November 6, 2010

  69. Elaine November 6, 2010

I can’t wait to make these biscuits. I’m looking forward to mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving too, but probably more than that, I can’t wait for the dessert!

  70. Tanja in VA. Beach November 6, 2010

I am making these biscuits today!!!! I am looking forward to eating turkey this year, because I reserved one from a cruelty free farm of a friend of mine. This turkey has had free range of the farm and fed on grass, bugs, etc. I’m not sure whether to feel more or less guilty, but have a feeling that I will enjoy it either way. Thanks for the chance!

  71. Melissa Johnson November 6, 2010

I will definitely try these biscuits! There are several things I’m looking most forward to eating at Thanksgiving. Fresh cranberry sauce, homemade dressing, “lottie” ( a spicy apple salad named after an aunt), and hazelnut pie. Wow, I’m ready to start cooking! Thanks for sharing.

  72. Larissa November 6, 2010

I am looking forward to the entire meal. Each of my family members has a signature dish that we get to enjoy a few times a year, so on Thanksgiving it is a buffet of the “Kelly Favorites”…(sigh) I can’t wait. I am anticipating my Dad’s turkey and stuffing (amazing), aunt cindy’s green bean casserole (yummy), aunt debbie’s macaroni and cheese (best ever), aunt deedee’s rolls (not homemade, but that’s ok she knows where to find good ones), and my grandmas apple pie (definitely having two pieces).

  73. Mary Jane November 6, 2010

I’m looking forward to my daughters and their families coming to Thanksgiving dinner! They each bring a dish of traditional Thanksgiving dishes, it’s really great to see their take on the things they grew up on!

It doesn’t matter the food; I’m looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with my family for the first time in 6 years.

  79. Mary November 5, 2010

I am looking forward to spending time with my family and wearing 2 shoes. I’ve been fighting a fractured foot since April and finally had surgery to fix it. I’m hoping to be healed enough to not only enjoy Thanksgiving but also to be able to help prepare it.

  80. Deliliah Lynn November 5, 2010

I love a bit of everything Thanksgiving but mashed potatoes and the stuffing directly from the bird both smothered with gravy are my favorites :-)

  81. Marianne November 5, 2010

I got married in June and three days later my husband left for another state with his job. We have always cooked together and he just told me he will be back for a visit at Thanksgiving, so I’m looking forward to eating ANYTHING as long as he’s there to help me cook it! Can’t wait!

  82. Anne November 5, 2010

I just made my Thanksgiving list today (I know, I’m a bit of an obsessive planner): pumpkin bread for Thanksgiving breakfast, brined turkey breast, real sweet potatoes (my husband is from Seattle and is obsessed with the yellow sweet potatoes, not yams), STUFFING (my favorite), green beans, pecan pie. Now please excuse me while I go wipe the drool off my face.

  83. Jeanne November 5, 2010

Thanks for the wonderful biscuit recipe! We found a recipe for plum-glazed turkey that we tried last year…it was fabulous!! That will definitely be back for a repeat performance this year! Happy Holidays!

  84. Debby November 5, 2010

I’m with you on the mashed potatoes! Love them with loads of butter and gravy! This year, my mom, stepdad and brother are coming for Thanksgiving dinner and when we get together we all try to each bring something new to the meal and a new dessert….so I’m looking forward to trying 3 new side dishes and 3 different desserts.

  85. Jenny November 5, 2010

Oh, these look delicious and very simple to prepare!! I will make them if I win the cookbook or not! :) I, like you, am most looking forward to mashed potatoes and home made turkey gravy. YUM! I cannot wait. :)

  86. Carolyn November 5, 2010

These look so yummy! This year, I am spending thanksgiving with my bf’s family, so I am most excited to see what different things they will be serving!

  87. Mrs. L November 5, 2010

It wouldn’t be a Thanksgiving or Christmas without biscuits but last time I made them they were hockey pucks so I usually buy them from the store. Time to try these and make my own.
Thanksgiving to me was all about my Grandmas creamed onions. No one makes them like she did.

  88. Andrea November 5, 2010

I can’t wait for turkey with homemade cranberries (none of that canned junk!) and green bean casserole…

  89. Kathy November 5, 2010

A biscuit made with cream is a lovely, light bite. Mmmm. I RT and send your recipes up to facebook…..plus I actually make them. Everyone loves your site.

  90. Anita November 5, 2010

    Turkey! ‘nough said.

  91. Curiouseats -Lissa November 5, 2010

I’ve been dying to make biscuits. I think the recipe I’ve. Been thinking of is from a WS catalog and includes bacon and cheddar.

  92. Susan Marie November 5, 2010

I am looking forward to ALL of it! Except the pecan pie – I just can’t eat pecans. The holidays are the one time of year we put so much effort into creating mouth-watering dishes, and I can’t wait to dig in! Des, I’ve enjoyed your blog for some time now, and your recipes are delicious. Those biscuits sound wonderful, and just the thing to eat with my homemade tomato soup – thank you!

  93. Jess November 5, 2010

I most definitely am a biscuit girl and these look great! I can’t wait for the stuffing. I only used to eat Stove Top as a kid and insisted the from scratch stuff was gross. I was a weirdo. Now stuffing is my favorite part of the meal!

  94. Debbie November 5, 2010

I’m looking forward to baked lemon cod w/panko bread crumbs! We have a wacky Thanksgiving with some traditional items and some interesting odds and ends. For a long long time Thanksgiving was at my mom and dad’s, but the last several years I’ve been the hostess – mom and dad need a break! The beginning of November the calls start flying with suggestions for this and that.. this year it’s the traditionals along with the baked fish, proscuitto wrapped corn muffins with maple drizzle, and Bailey’s Irish Cream mousse with dark chocolate. Believe it or not, it’s always semi-sorta healthy!

  95. Danielle November 5, 2010

Those look delicious. :) I’m particularly looking forward to a slice of my mom’s apple pie as Thanksgiving approaches!

  96. Fun and Fearless in Beantown November 5, 2010

These biscuits look fantastic! I’m looking forward to mashed potatoes (for both Thanksgiving and Christmas)…and introducing spinach kugel for Hanukkah!
