Seattle Dog

The Seattle Dog is Hot Dog Perfection. A perfectly cooked sausage slathered with cream cheese, and topped with caramelized onions and tangy mustard.

I think almost every region of the US has a hot dog of it’s own. You’ve got the Chicago Dog, Coney Island dogs, Sonoran Hot Dog, NY Hot Dog the list goes on and on. I myself have shared Jalapeno Popper Dogs, Cajun Hot Dogs, and Loaded BBQ Hot Dogs. There are just SO many ways to top them! Today I’m sharing with you the hot dog that is popular in my neck of the woods: The Seattle Dog.

This is a recipe that I have thought about sharing at one time or another over the years but never did. I was hesitant because most might think I’m crazy when I say: Cream cheese on a hot dog is amazing.

When I first moved to Seattle about a decade ago, I had never heard of the Seattle dog. In fact, when I first heard about it my initial reaction was: Are you serious? Cream cheese on a hot dog? It was especially popular whenever we would leave the bar. All of the street vendors would be selling them right outside the bar doors.

I figured it was only drunk people who liked them.

I mean really. Cream cheese. On a hot dog.

Then one time, before a Mariners game, I decided to try one.

I had not had one sip of alcohol. Mind you. I just wanted to give it a go.

Holy moly. They are good. It just works. Trust me. The textures work so well together. It’s seriously my favorite way to enjoy a hot dog now.

Now I say hot dog, but I actually use sausages because I do like them more than your traditional hot dog. Most street vendors around here will serve these using a traditional hot dog or a polish sausage.

So I know it might sound crazy but give it a try, it just might surprise you.

When I first moved to Seattle around 20 years ago, I was in Fremont late night at 2am once the bars had closed. Stood in line at a hotdog stand and my friend ordered a Seattle Dog. I was disgusted at first looking at all of the ingredients added, but the vendor promised me that if I didn’t love it, I could have it for free and he’d make me a boring dog with mustard only. I said SURE and happy I did, because the Seattle Dog was heavenly. But the recipe back then in the mid-2000s was a bit different with the Seattle Dogs I enjoyed in Fremont, Ballard, Pioneer Sq, and Cap Hill.

Back then, the Seattle Dog was:

    * A sliced grilled dog
    * Cream cheese spread on the bun
    * Dog added to bun, then drizzled with Sriracha sauce (no mustard)
    * Then all covered with grilled onions
    * If extra spice was desired, a few jalapeno slices were added

The benefit of adding the Sriracha to the dog before the onions was that then the sauce wouldn’t get all over your face while you ate it, as the onions kept it sealed in.

Try this version, you may enjoy it!

Fremont was where I had my first Seattle dog too! I don’t think I ever had sriracha on one but now I am definitely going to try it. Sounds amazing!
