Chili Dog Tater Tot Casserole

Jump to Recipe

Chili Dog Tater Tot Casserole is the easiest casserole you’ll make! This 5 ingredient casserole is a big hit with the kiddos too.

We are a Little League family which means that when Spring rolls around we are busy. Between games and practices with the two boys, our dinners can sometimes be a bit rushed. That is the time that I am searching for quick, easy recipes that will fill my family up while also being something they aren’t going to complain about eating it. Enter this Chili Dog Tater Tot Casserole.

Guys, my family gobbled this up. My somewhat picky 10 year old even had multiple helpings. And guess what, my husband and I loved it too! It really was a hit with the entire family. How could it not be? Loaded with chili, hot dogs, cheese and tater tots? I mean all tasty things combined in one filling casserole.

The best part? It’s crazy easy to make!

First let’s talk about the ingredients you’ll need to make it. There are only 5! Well 4 with 1 optional.

Ingredients for Chili Dog Tater Tot Casserole:

JUMBO HOT DOGS: These are going to be thicker than “bun size” or regular sized hot dogs. I tend to prefer them but you can really use any sized hot dogs that you’ve got on hand. If you’re using the smaller hot dogs, use a few more.

CHILI: Use your favorite can of chili. You can use one with beans, one without or a combo of the two.

TATER TOTS: Grab a 20oz bag of frozen tater tots for this recipe. Depending on the size of your baking dish, you probably won’t use the whole bag.

CHEDDAR CHEESE: Freshly shredded cheddar cheese works the best for this!

YELLOW ONION: I always like to top my chili dogs with freshly minced onions, the kiddos don’t. For this reason, I just serve some minced onions on the side for garnish. They are totally optional.

Step by Step Instructions and Photos:

Guys, like I mentioned above, this Chili Dog Tater Tot Casserole is a cinch to make.

STEP #1: Combine the hot dogs, chili and 1 cup of cheese together in a large bowl.

STEP #2: Place mixture into a casserole dish. I used a 9×13 once and a 2qt casserole another time. Both worked well. Top with rows of tater tots.

STEP #3: Bake at 425 degrees for 25 – 30 minutes or until the tater tots are golden brown and crisp. Remove form oven, sprinkle with remaining cup of cheese and cook 1 – 2 more minutes or until the cheese is melted.

STEP #4: Serve with minced onions and more shedded cheese to garnish.

See! I told you it was easy! And as soon as I got this on the table the kiddos devoured it.

Equipment

  • 1/2 yellow onion minced, optional

Ingredients

  • 5 whole jumbo hot dogs sliced into bite sized rounds
  • 2 cans chili (14.5 ounce cans)
  • 2 cups shredded medium cheddar cheese divided
  • 20 ounces frozen tater tots
  • 1/2 yellow onion minced, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit.
  • Combine sliced hot dogs, cans of chili and 1 cup of shredded cheddar together in a bowl.
  • Place mixture in a large casserole baking dish. I used a 9 x 13 but a smaller dish would work too. Top with tater tots.
  • Bake at 425 degrees for 25 – 30 minutes or until tater tots are browned and crisp. Remove from oven and top with remaining cup of shredded cheese. Cook 1 – 2 more minutes or until cheese melts.
  • Serve with more shredded cheddar and minced onion.

Notes

You can use 8 smaller hot dogs if you don’t have the jumbo.
We like chili with beans but you could use chili without beans or 1 can with and one can without.
Depending on the size of the casserole dish that you use, you likely won’t need the entire bag of tater tots.

    5 stars
This was very simple to make but pretty delicious! I only had four large hot dogs, but they were plenty, and I put extra cheese on top to make it even better. Definitely one I’ll be making again!
