Grilled Steak with Avocado Sauce is a flavor explosion! The steak is seasoned and then grilled to perfection and served along side a creamy avocado sauce. Great on it’s own or served in tacos!
Around here we are all about the taco Tuesday, usually. But every once in a while I like to mix things up by serving something a little different but that still has the Mexican flare that my family has come to look forward to every Tuesday.
That is where this Grilled Steak with Creamy Avocado Sauce comes into play. The steak is seasoned with cumin, chili powder, onion and garlic and then grilled to perfection. And while the steak is fantastic on it’s own, we need to talk about this avocado sauce.

Think part guacamole, part creamy sauce. I was spreading it all over the steak, dunking my chips in it and even eating it with a spoon. It’s that good guys. But it’s not just me saying it! There are reviews from fellow readers too :)
Andrea says: Fantastic! Followed the recipe to the tee and it was delicious. Big hit with my husband and now on our meal rotation. It was recommended to me by my brother who lives in Taiwan. Kudos to the chef!
So let’s talk about what you’ll need to get this easy dinner on your table.
What ingredients do you need:
There are two components to this dish: the steak and the avocado sauce so I’ve separated this into 2 sections.
To make the steak you’ll need:
- Flat Iron Steak: If someone asked me what my favorite cut of steak was, I’d have to say flat iron. Not ribeye (although delicious), NY strip, or even Filet Mignon. Flat Iron Steak is my absolute favorite cut. It is from the top blade of the beef and is extremely tender. It is great for grilling and can be used in so many different recipes. I also like that the price point tends to be lower than the pricier cuts. Check out the Beef It’s What’s For Dinner article for more info on Flat Iron Steaks .
- Granulated Garlic/Onion Powder/Cumin/Chili Powder/Salt: These ingredients are what is going to give your steak that latin flavor. You can substitute garlic powder for the granulated garlic. If you substitute garlic salt, I’d omit the additional salt.

To make the Avocado Sauce:
- Avocado: Obviously.
- Cilantro: I know some don’t like cilantro but I think it works really well in this sauce.
- Garlic: 1-2 small cloves is all you need, you don’t want to overpower the sauce.
- Red Wine Vinegar: This adds acidity which helps lighten the creaminess of the sauce.
- Olive Oil: Helps make the sauce really smooth.
- Salt: To help bring out the flavors of the other ingredients.
- Lime: More acidity to really brighten the sauce.

Step by Step Photos and Instructions:
This steak recipe is actually incredibly easy to make which makes it perfect for weeknight meals, or nights when you want to get something on the table without sacrificing any deliciousness.

Make the spice rub.
Rub spices on both sides of the steak.
Make the avocado sauce. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Grill steak. Depending on thickness will be 5 – 7 per side for medium rare.
Allow steak to rest for 10 minutes then slice against the grain.
STEP #1: Combine all of the seasonings for the steak together in a bowl. And rub them all over the steak. Making sure to season both sides.
STEP #2: Preheat your grill to medium heat.
STEP #3: Place all of the ingredients to make the sauce into a food processor (or blender) and process until smooth. Cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to use.
STEP #4: Cook steak on the preheated grill. Depending on the thickness of your steak this should take 5 – 7 minutes per side for medium rare. Remove steak from grill and allow to rest for 10 minutes.
DES’ TIP: Please don’t skip the resting part! When steak has a chance to rest, the juices redistribute and result in a much more tender bite. This goes for any steak, not just this one!
STEP #5: Slice steak against the grain and serve with the sauce.

As you can see the sauce is pretty thick. I like to serve it with a bowl and a spoon along side so people can chose to dip their steak or spoon it over the top. But either way, if the indication from the way my family gobbled this down means anything, your family is going to love this too.
You can serve this steak on it’s own with the sauce as a main dish. Or you can slice it and serve it with the sauce in tacos, on top of nachos or even on top of a burrito bowl. You’ll love it!

This very simple recipe was slightly outstanding I loved it. The first time I’ve ever used guacamole over grilled steak before can’t wait to make it again thanks a lot
Sorry you didn’t enjoy it, Bob! Thanks for the feedback.
I’m sorry, I’m not usually like this, but I hated this recipe. Start with guacamole, replace diced tomatoes and pepper with too much vinegar, use to ruin a steak.
Hi John! It’s in the sauce! After you rub the steak with the seasonings, combine the other ingredients (including the avocado) in a food processor :)
Where’s the avocado?
Fantastic! Followed the recipe to the tee and it was delicious. Big hit with my husband and now on our meal rotation. It was recommended to me by my brother who lives in Taiwan. Kudos to the chef!
So happy to hear that you enjoyed it, Jasmine-Marie!!
O my gosh this stuff is AMAZING!!! I love it so much!! Definitely recommend for those avocado lovers out there!!
Happy to hear that Daniel! Thank you for sharing!
The avocado sauce stole the show. I cooked a couple new york strips in a cast iron instead of grilling. Standard butter, garlic, and rosemary cooked to a medium rare. The creamy avocado sauce was refreshing, and substituting parsley was a great idea. My wife was extremely impressed overall. I will definitely be using the sauce again on other meats.
You could use Italian parsley instead so you still get the bright green color without the cilantro taste!
Hi. I don’t like cilantro. Anything else I can use in place of it? Thanks!
So good!!!
I didn’t have any coriander so I replaced it with basil, served it with sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts and lime rice. It was awesome!! The avocado sauce and the steak flavour was perfect! So glad I made enough for a repeat tomorrow night!
Pismomama- That is awesome to hear!! I love that it’s just as delicious with chunked avocado too :)
I made this tonight, but don’t have a food processor so left the avocado in chunks and chopped the cilantro finely. Simply AMAZING! Put it on a NY strip steak and have to say this is going in my book of favorites!
I made this for my wife and I tonight, and it was amazing!
I am so happy to hear that Kimberly! Thank you!
I think this is a fabulous recipe that you could use as a base for many dishes.
It’s great as it is however, with the addition of jalapeño or other hot pepper choices you could have a southwest theme.
Thanks for the recipe!

The avocado sauce looks amazing! I can’t wait to try it on steak tacos this week!!
I’m not very adept at cooking steak at home, but I absolutely love the sound of the avocado sauce. Mmmmmm.
The sauce looks so good Des, I think you could put that one just about anything!
That sauce looks incredible! I can’t wait to try it!
Ha, ha. My pictures aren’t very good because, once the food is cooked, I just want to get to the table. I am a huge fan of flatiron steak. Nice dish!
